Law during Covid-19

Covid-19 has changed how people do things and the practice of law is not immune to the necessary adjustments. A lot of people are asking if the courts and our office are open.
The short answer is yes: the courts are still open and Harter & Schottland remains open as an essential service. ( see Executive Order 2020-10, section 1, subpart (12)( r), here:
https://www2.illinois.gov/Pages/Executive-Orders/ExecutiveOrder2020-10.aspx
).
Accordingly, Harter & Schottland remains committed to providing the best possible legal service to our clients. However, we also remain dedicated to our incredible team that allows us to meet high expectations every day. Therefore, we have made some changes around the office to ensure their well-being and to feel safe.
First, for the time being, we are offering phone or video appointments for all new and existing clients. Limiting the number of people coming in the office is safer for everybody. However, some clients need to come in the office for various reasons such as dropping off or picking up documents. We added a protective barrier to our reception window for both our clients' and our team's safety.

Additionally, we are providing protective gear, as modeled by Giselle, above. Consistent with CDC recommendations, we are making a supply of gloves and masks available to our team.
We have also made changes inside our office. First, we have ensured that Harter & Schottland maintains an adequate supply of disinfectants. Further, we maintain a regular regimen of cleaning and disinfecting surfaces such as counters, door handles and areas or items that are touched frequently.
Additionally, even in the office with one another, we are maintaining appropriate distancing. This is made easier by the fact that we are taking turns working from home to limit the number of people in the office at one time. We recently updated our phone system, which ensures our ongoing ability to provide the best possible service to our clients while working from home. Phone calls made to the office can be seamlessly transferred to team members who are working from home. This ensures that our clients can talk to the people they need to talk to, when they need to talk to them. Relatedly, we added functionality to our computer network to allow team members working at home to securely access the office system through an encrypted connection.
With these changes, Harter & Schottland can safely continue providing the high quality legal service that our clients expect and deserve in the following areas during this time:
- Traffic, DUI & Criminal Defense
- Family Law
- Driver's License Reinstatement
- Real Estate
- Injury / Worker's Compensation
Harter & Schottland is about to celebrate its 16th year. We have made it this far with the incredible help and support of countless wonderful clients, associates, court personnel, friends, staff and others for whom we are endlessly grateful. But day to day, it is the genuine commitment to the vision and goals of our firm that enable Harter & Schottland to provide not only high quality legal representation, but unparalleled service, as well. In the office we strive to treat one another as family and support and encourage one another. Never has there been a more important time to do that than right now and never has Harter & Schottland been more grateful to our dedicated and wonderful team. We will continue to monitor the situation and make changes as necessary to protect our team and serve our clients safely.
